Intermittent Fasting as a Paleo Breakfast Ideas
If you’re new to paleo, you might have heard of intermittent fasting. Before you run off – it’s not as scary as it sounds. The quick rundown of intermittent fasting is that you eat for X amount of hours a day and stop eating for Y amount of hours a day.
In practice, there tend to be standard intermittent fasting windows that tend to be followed, but the three most common are:
- 10 on / 14 off
- 8 on / 16 off
- 4 on / 20 off
The exact hours differ based on your plan, but almost all paleo practitioners practice Intermittent Fasting and eat NO BREAKFAST WHATSOEVER in the morning. Yes, this might sound like blasphemy when you’ve heard your entire life that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, but there is science behind it.
The reasoning behind this is that after a good night’s sleep, your body has regulated your hormones back to their optimal levels. This means that your blood sugar & insulin levels (specifically) are low.
When your insulin levels are low, your body’s preference is to burn fat. By skipping breakfast, you teach your body to gain energy by burning fat first thing in the morning. When people eat a huge breakfast or something very carb-heavy, they essentially put a stop order in on their body burning fat and tell their body to eat carbs instead.
